What are the most common mistakes that people make when building their own websites?
That’s a tough question to answer because there are so many different types of websites. However, I will give you my top 7 mistakes that I routinely see when my company performs website audits for small businesses.
#1 – The website is not mobile-friendly.
This one takes the cake by far! Every year millions of dollars is wasted because a small business owner doesn’t take the time to make their website mobile friendly.
And no, your site does not need to be a fancy responsive design in order for it to work on a mobile device – there are plenty of sites out there using fixed width layouts that give a great user experience on a mobile device. It’s not a matter of how your site looks, but more about how your site works.
If you have a lot of text on the page, make sure that it is big enough to read without glasses! When designing buttons and other clickable areas, make sure to test them with your audience.
Rather than having a top navigation bar with links to their main pages, some small business owners think that it’s ok to just have the logo and add one or two links under it (home page and contact page). This makes for a very poor user experience.
People need to be able to find the pages that they are looking for in 2 seconds or less – otherwise they will start looking for your site on Google (which is not good, because you want people to buy your products and services).
#4 – They don’t use headers & subheaders properly.
Make sure to use the correct HTML heading tags ( H1, H2, etc. ) when you are writing your main copy – this is important for SEO purposes as well as accessibility reasons.
I highly recommend that you implement a content management system (CMS) into your website so that you can update your pages easily instead of copying & pasting from a word document.
#5 – The website takes too long to load.
Get rid of the bells and whistles that you don’t need on your site – nobody wants to wait for a page to load, especially when it comes to mobile devices!
If you have a lot of images or videos on your site, consider using a content delivery network (CDN) so that your visitors can download them from a server close to their physical location.
#6 – The images and videos on the site are too small or of poor quality.
Having great looking images and video is important for your website, but don’t go overboard with them! People are much more likely to leave your site when it takes too long to load or when images and videos take forever to load.
#7 – There is no email sign-up form on the contact page.
This is a big mistake that I see all the time – why would someone want to contact you if they can’t sign up for your email list to find out about future promotions and offers?! Make sure that you provide them with an email sign-up form somewhere on each page of your website.
Social media is an integral part of search engine optimization. If you want to be found by new customers, then links shared on social media are a great way to boost your site’s rank in search results. Here are some ideas about how you can use social media for your small business website:
1. Use Twitter as a marketing tool. Promote your products and services by sharing links on Twitter. If you offer a product or service that benefits others, then tweet about it often to solicit engagement and responses from followers.
2. Join Facebook groups related to your industry. These groups are full of people with who you can engage directly in order to generate buzz about your website. It’s also a great way to learn about issues and concerns your target audience might have.
3. Use LinkedIn as a networking tool. Join groups related to your industry and start engaging with members. You can use this site for its intended purpose, or you can find people who are interested in the products and services you offer so you can generate leads.
4. Use Pinterest as a visual marketing tool. If you’ve created a great image for your product or service, then pin it to one of your boards. Add a link to that image, and you can drive traffic to your site as people click through the pins.
